RELIVING DZUP DAYS - Week 3

May 2-4, 2007
Week 3

The third week of my DZUP internship went well. Writing scripts, reading it, and commenting on it now seemed to be natural to me already, a sort of a habit-forming routine. After my 12-1 shift for news and commentary programs, I would want to stay because I was enjoying to the limits the drama for the week which was about summer flings. I was the narrator’s voice and I had fun reading my lines in a flirtatious manner, especially the title ‘Summer Fling,’ perhaps a hint that I am really a flirt. (Evil laugh) My multi-voicing was used again as there were days when I had to do at least two voices for the drama. With this kind of production, the more I realized the lessons Ma’am Pinky gave during BC102 days.

However, on our Friday airing, Karol and I had to deliver the news at the guest booth because the previous hosts Madel and Jecs were trapped inside the live studio booth. I realized how convenient it could be when the host could manipulate the music and console himself, because in my case, I had to read kilometric paragraphs and there were times that I felt like air was not going through my system anymore. Fading up the music is a good way to have that much-needed momentary rests and I couldn’t do that simply because I was in the other booth and the bed music controller was in another. Came commentary, the live studio booth’s door was opened (thanks to the incessant hammering of the knob by Kuya Lui and other staff there) so I was able to spin the music already and control the pace of our discussion.

RELIVING DZUP DAYS - Week 2

April 24-27
Week 2

This second week, as tasked, I handled the news and commentary programs for Wednesday and Friday. Everything went fine excluding the erratic CDs which at first were thought to be damaged because they were only burned (some posited that this might be because of the fingerprints embedded in the sensitive side of the CDs) but later that week, it was concluded that the skipping music might be because of the old CD players because even original CDs were now skipping.

In terms of scriptwriting for news, my partner (Karol a.k.a. Luke) and I began to feel difficulty in finding UP community news because not much happened since it is summer, and the semester planning of the university and college student councils had been reported on already earlier that week.

In our commentary program, we just turned it into habit that what we reported during our news program would be the issues that we would be commenting upon. If before, we were thinking of under time, now we had to restraint ourselves a little because we got involved too much in the topic and we had the tendency to talk and talk and talk, with sense and substantial commentaries of course—at least, from what I believe in.

This was also the week when our radio drama started, and I was so proud that my classmates were competent enough to handle live drama directing and performances, when sometimes some of us would only read the script a couple of hours before the airing. This drama assignment that was given to me gave me the most pressure in the earlier parts of the internship because I thought I would be the only one to write every episode of that drama for every single day of this summer internship. But when I consulted it to our president, he said that I was not assigned to do everything but I just had to make sure that something would be aired daily for that slot.

For our initial presentation, I wrote the story outline of the drama which was about the struggling bold star, Matt Apostol (that started only as a joke) and wrote the whole first episode. I then delegated the task of writing a day episode to some of my classmates which were very competitive to have come up with a 30-minute drama.

Then the first day came and I was out for my internship outside. I was very excited to see the result of what I planned and wrote but unfortunately I wasn’t around. I entrusted it instead to the people present and they said that it went very well. I was very glad to hear that from the program director of the day. In the latter days of the week, I found myself performing one of the characters I created and I must say that it was fun acting again live sans any take two’s. There were scenes that we were in the verge of laughing already but we could not do that of course because we were live.

As I was writing this journal, excitement was slowly making its presence felt again as I was expecting another character portrayal for next week’s drama. Another productive week of summer internship passed anew.

RELIVING DZUP DAYS

WEEK 1

Backtrack first: Even before the official classes for summer began, we, the interns, were already meeting up to make our programming grid and the concept of the whole summer DZUP airing. We also had rounds of recording for the teasers of our respective programs which were food-like in its name, along with our radio monikers which were combinations of a biblical character for the first name and a food for the last names, as inspired by the inside joke on our director’s name and the theme of DZUP. I was baptized Abraham Estofado. We also reserved a day for our photo shoot that would be used for the promotion and marketing of the DZUP. I was very excited about the start of our airing and was vocal about it even to my friends outside. I even invited them to listen to 1602.

Now, the main event: So, this was our first week as interns for DZUP. During the planning and conceptualizing stages for the different programs that we would be airing, I could say that I was confident enough to go on air because my co-interns seemed confident as well. But when it was the actual time for me to go on air, I felt a bit nervous because the last time I was in a radio studio anchoring a radio program was during the first semester for BC 102, and this time, what we would be airing would be heard by the UP community, or at least, the College of Mass Communication, specifically those under the skywalk. People might hear me and criticize me, especially those from CMC who are very knowledgeable on radio production and performance.

But as I went along, I felt comfortable already. On that first day, I was on air for two consecutive hours and my partner and I in the newscast had some panicking moments because we ran out of news and so we went undertime. Good thing, the next program would have us as the anchors again so I decided to just finish the newscast and proceed to the next program.

Also at first, I was hesitant to control the console because I thought it would just destruct my attention in hosting, but I realized that I could not afford not to learn the spinner’s job because sooner and later, I would be the one controlling it. True enough, there were segments in the latter days that had only me to control the music, especially on that day when I served as the program director and I had to play music fillers for the drama preparation.

---

With this summer activity for me (that is, the radio internship), I feel like I am so productive because everything that I learned from my past radio production and performance subjects before (I even took advanced radio production for elective) come into real play, and I get to practice my writing skills almost everyday because of the segments I have. Because I’m handling the commentary part, I also become an informed and opinionated UP student and citizen of this country.

This first week also taught me how to be a quick-thinker because some CDs were erratic that even the national anthem jumped a number of times when I was the program director. This early, I also saw how camaraderie and cohesiveness have been fostered by us, being each other’s spinner and speech/performance coach during our respective on-air programs.

recovered (incomplete) post

Last week (May 28-31), Apple and I served as facilitators and resource persons for the National Summit for Youth and Child Radio Producers. The event which was organized by UNICEF and the Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication (AIJC) was held at Bayview Park Hotel, Manila. Almost 45 young radio broadecasters of 17 radio programs across the archipelago, participated in the event, the youngest is a ten-year-old boy. It's amazing to learn that at a very tender age, these children are already able to broadcast news, interviews, and music in their respective communities. >>> this is still long but because of this erratic blogger, it's all lost!
